Picture Postcard – Tucson, Arizona
Rattlesnakes are hiding everywhere in the desert southwest. We found this huge rattler while exploring the Tucson bike trails back in 2013.
The Diamondback Bridge, a bike and pedestrian connection to downtown over a major roadway, is a clever way to enhance functional infrastructure. The basic design was an elongated caged-bridge crossing already reminiscent of a snake so the flourishes including a motion-triggered rattle sound on the tail end provide a delight each time the route is used by the community.
Designed by Tucson artist Simon Donovan, this public art piece reflects the rattlesnake’s protective role in Native American mythology.
