Picture Postcard – Venice Biennial
The geometric sculpture took shape over a number of days in the Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti courtyard as Venice prepared for the 2014 Architecture Biennale.
Part of a series by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, Forever Bicycles was assembled by technicians while the artist was being detained by the Chinese government. Inspired by the ubiquitous transportation brand of his childhood, the Forever series has taken many forms over the years; a reflection on the individual as part of the collective and status through luxury versions of workhorse goods.
I am always drawn to bicycles and found this work to be an elegant yet ironic placement in this city of canals.
Welcome to a new series of travel postcards that I’ll be posting twice a week. Click on the card for a larger view.
