Picture Postcard – San Diego
Sailing and Sailors are what San Diego has always meant to me. For some reason, I’ve never associated the town with fishing.
On our last visit to San Diego we found this homage to the City’s long history of tuna fishing. The Fish Tree by Zbigniew “Ben” Pingot and Tobias Flores is part of San Diego’s Public Art program. Look for it in the Embarcadero Marina Park North just past Tuna Harbor Park.
This 2012 KPBS interview features a retired local fisherman and the curator of the History Center’s exhibit “Tuna! Celebrating San Diego’s Famous Fishing Industry.” It was interesting to learn that the neighborhoods such as Little Italy and Barrio Loma built by the Italian, Portuguese, Japanese and Hispanic immigrants all have ties back to the tuna industry.
Welcome to a new series of travel postcards that I’ll be posting twice a week. Click on the card for a larger view.
