Hello World – Can’t Wait to Meet You!
My name is Eileen Schaubert and for the moment I am in Santa Monica, California with my husband of 26 years, Joel. We’ve transitioned into a nomadic existence of sorts after selling our home in Austin, Texas along with pretty much all our belongings. What remains has to fit in a Honda Element and even that has been pared down over the past two years. So far we aren’t backpacking or bicycle touring but have spent our time traveling light across the States and Europe.
Friends and the people we meet are fascinated by what we’ve done as they try to imagine themselves on a parallel journey. That’s why I’m finally getting around to this blog. My plan is to write about our travels — past and present — along with musings on bicycling, travel, urban planning, active transportation, advocacy, minimalism, digital nomads, public art, wildlife and whatever else I find on the way.
I’d love to connect with people creating new ways to explore this fantastic world whether that be as a traveler, someone deeply rooted to place or anywhere in between. My hope is to trigger ideas that will inspire people to take some chances in their own life beyond what complacency will bring and learn from others as they build their unique path.
Great intro Eileen. I have on my bucket list to RV across the US and hit every state. I am a bit envious at the moment.

Robin – we’ve done a bit of RVing but found that we like the freedom to leave a place when the bathroom needs cleaning! (I was a hotel maid in my early days…)
I hope you’ve started on the list – there is no reason to wait. If you’re not ready to take the plunge, rent RVs for the first couple of trips so you’ll know what size to eventually buy. Years ago we transported an RV from Florida to Chicago at the end of the winter season. Taught us a lot about how we like to travel.

LOL I never thought about who would clean the bathroom. How is it a vacation if you have to do house work?!
I am definately working on that list.

How about a “Tiny House” or SilverStream? Just some of my own dreams. I helped build a Community Wood-Fired Oven in our neighborhood in South Minnepolis, MN. I would love to hear more about how you and your husband are doing something 99% of the rest of the U.S.A. may never be able to afford.

Rico – have you posted about the Community Oven yet? We spent the late summer and fall in Minneapolis.
The trick for us is to keep housing expenses low compared to what we were spending in Austin. I’ll be writing more lessons learned about keeping costs down over time.

Wishing good travels to both of you. I get the impression your traveling in an RV. If so, take the back roads. The are much more interesting.

After so many years in planning, it doesn’t seem like it’s very courageous but then we see the look of anxiety on people’s faces when we explain what we’ve done…

Santa Monica? Awesome! I used to live in Ventura County, went to school out there. Great place. I think I’ve been living a ‘sort of’ nomadic lifestyle as well, for the past 5 years. All I can say about it, is that it is truly freeing. Have a great time. Oh, I’m from California, but now live in your state Texas. That is another reason I had to comment. Have a great weekend 😉
