Picture Postcard – Shoup Glacier
The Port of Valdez, Alaska is home to Shoup Glacier.
We kayaked to the glacier as part of a cycling trip with the company AlaskaBike. The kayaking was really easy except for a narrow passage on the return trip that spit the boats through some choppy water. All the boats made it through with no problems but it was exciting to experience a brief bit of white water.
Glaciers are constantly changing. Shoup has been both receding, exposing more land and ice calving, creating brackish bay water. A fascinating film called Chasing Ice captures the largest glacier calving event. I’m so glad that we have had so many opportunities to see and appreciate magnificent places.
Welcome to a new series of travel postcards that I’ll be posting twice a week. Click on the card for a larger view.
